Math professors from all over New England are riveted as Harvard
student William James Sidis propounds new theories on the fourth
dimension. Sidis punctuates his lecture with row of complex
formulae to prove his points. The 10-year-old boy is repeatedly
interrupted with pleas to explain his calculations in more detail.

15, 1928
Seventy years after it was begun by Sir James Murray, language
scholars complete the Oxford English dictionary, providing not
just the meaning of every word, but its origins and history
as well.

The Oberlin Collegiate Institute in Oberlin, Ohio, is incorporated
today. It's the country's first coeducational college, and it
will become the first school to take an abolitionist stand and
the first to accept black students of both sexes on the same
basis as white students.

10, 1845
The United States Naval Academy officially opens at Annapolis,
Maryland. Commander Frank Buchanan is its first superintendent,
overseeing the first 80 students.

1, 1903
The son of a tobacco dealer and a student of Zionism, Eugene
H. Lehman becomes the first American to receive the Rhodes scholarship
to Oxford University.

12, 1853
Willamette University in the Oregon Territory becomes the first
institution of higher education chartered west of the Rocky
Mountains.
February
7, 1818
The first issue of the "Academician," a magazine for educators
is published in New York City. At three dollars a year subscription,
it offers teaching tips and advice.
