17, 1903
One of mankind's oldest dreams is realized at 10:25 A.M. as
32-year-old Orville Wright takes off in the Flyer I from Kill
Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The 745-pound, 12-horsepower
plane, designed after years of experimentation by Orville and
his brother Wilbur, flies 120 feet in 12 seconds and reaches
a speed of 35 miles per hour.

29, 1891
Liliukalani, composer of "Aloha Oe," is named Queen of Hawaii.
Less than two years later she will be deposed as the Hawaiian
Islands' last reigning monarch at the insistence of American
businessmen and through the efforts of the U.S. Navy.

20, 1837
An 18-year-old Princess awakens to learn that during the night
she became a Queen. With the death of her father, William IV,
Victoria inherits the throne of England and will rule for the
next 63 years.

1, 1701
For Swiss Protestants, this day and the next ten never occur,
as they switch over to the Gregorian Calendar, introduced by
the German Catholic states on January 1, 1583. In order to synchronize,
the Swiss begin the new year on January 12, 1701.

12, 1927
Captain Charles A. Lindbergh becomes the first person to fly
the Atlantic Ocean solo. He lands at Le Bourget Field in Paris
at 10:20 PM, 33 and one-half hours after his Spirit of St. Louis
struggled into the air under a 5,200-pound load at Roosevelt
Field in New York, 3,610 miles away.

1, 1793
The French Revolution accelerates today when France declares
war on Holland, England, and Spain.

15, 1094
"El Cid" (Cid Campeador), famed hero of numerous Spanish romances,
leads his troops to victory over Moorish forces at Valencia.
He will rule the region until his death five years from now.

10, 1946
The first session of the United Nations General Assembly convenes
and hears British Prime Minister Attlee caution representatives
of the 51 Countries about the destructive potential of the atomic
bomb.

18, 1914
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire, and his wife are assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.
Their deaths will ignite the Balkans and other European passions,
leading to the World War.

The first woman ever takes a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.

finally gain the right to vote in federal elections and to hold

Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, invades Russia. Despite

Empress Dowager and child Emperor Pu-Yi are forced to abdicate
the Chinese Throne, ending three centuries rule of the Manchu
dynasty. The Chinese Republic is thus established with Dr. Sun
Yat-Sen as its president.
